  1. Uninstall the application

There are many different forms of malware. It even pretends to be security software to help you to get rid of the virus on Mac!

If you accidentally download an application that was originally a virus, you will need to uninstall it immediately. There are several ways to do this. This is a tough way.

  • Go to your application folder and drag the app to the Trash.
  • Go to the Library folder and look for any files related to the application in the Application support folder and drag them to the Trash.
  • View other folders in the ~/Library, especially Launch Agents and Launch Daemons, and delete all files related to the application from there. But be careful, deleting files used by legitimate applications can cause a lot of problems.
  • Repeat step 3 for the Mac’s main library folder.

Easy way: Uninstall the app with just a few clicks

  • Download and launch CleanMyMac.
  • Click Uninstaller.
  • Check the box next to the application name.
  • Click “Uninstall”.

It’s even harder if you don’t know the name of the application. But if you use CleanMyMac, you can go through a list of simple applications to get rid of the virus on Mac and find anything you do not know or need, and then delete it. CleanMyMac removes every trace of the app, including files that may be ignored when manually deleting the app. This is especially important for viruses, so using CleanMyMac is much better.

  1. Use anti-virus tools

While the above steps work well in many situations, sometimes Mac virus removal means using a dedicated antivirus application to scan and remove malware from your Mac.

There are many of these apps available, many of which are free or allow you to at least scan your Mac for free to see if action is required. But be careful. It is important to choose a tool from a reputable supplier. If you’re just Google’s “Mac Anti-Virus“, some of the results near the top of the list may apply to tools that are inherently malicious, rather than removing the virus from the Mac to infect it. Here are some of the famous Mac antivirus tools which help to get rid of virus on mac.

  • Avast Free Mac Security
  • AVG Antivirus for Mac
  • BitDefender Antivirus for Mac
  • Kaspersky Internet Security Suite for Mac
  • Intego Mac Premium Bundle X9

A common way to install viruses on Macros is to initiate auto booting for Startup Agent . You can delete them manually, but if you delete the wrong file, you might create a problem for another legitimate application. CleanMyMac has a special tool to remove Launch Agents, which is more secure than manual.

  1. Delete browser extensions

One of the most common types of malware is browser extensions. Even non-permanent extensions can be confused and, if you do not intentionally install them, they are malware. Here’s how to get rid of virus on mac.

Here’s how to restore from Time Machine backup

  1. Make sure you are connected to a time machine backup drive.
  2. Restart your Mac, until you see the apple logo, hold down the command and R key. When the MacOS utility screen appears, select to restore from Time Machine Backup.
  3. Choose the last backup before the Mac starts misbehaving, or you suspect that you are infected with a virus.

Your Mac will now return to the state it was in when it was backed up.

If you don’t have a Time Machine backup to restore from, the last method is to reinstall macOS. This is a zero-based approach. You need to completely erase the boot drive and reboot. This means reinstalling all the apps and then copying all the data back to the Mac. If you have a recent data backup, you can use it to re-install and copy the data before the Mac is infected. If not, you now need to back up important files – but first scan them with anti-virus tools to make sure they are not infected.

To perform a fresh installation of macOS, you need a bootable installer disk. Creating one is beyond the scope of this article, but here is a comprehensive guide.

After you have created the Startup Installer and insert it into your Mac, go to System Preferences, select the boot disk, and then select the drive you have selected. Restart your Mac, do the command-r and do the following:

  1. When the MacOS Utilities screen appears, reinstall the new MacOS copy. When the next window appears, click continue.
  2. Agree to the terms and conditions. Then select your Mac internal disk.
  3. Click “Install”. Wait to restart the Mac.
  4. Your Mac will start up, just like it is a new Mac, you need to complete the process from scratch.
  5. After the setup is complete, copy the required files from the backup and confirm that you are not infected.
